SMART Goals

With the New Year, many people are making resolutions and considering setting goals, hoping for change and a fresh start this January.

To develop clear and concise goals and resolutions, think of the acronym S.M.A.R.T. This acronym stands for…specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. When setting a goal for yourself, be sure to include these details that make the objective well defined and doable.

For example, a person such as myself, who has difficulty hydrating, could set their S.M.A.R.T goal to drink 32 ounces of water each day in January, versus setting a goal to simply drink more water in the New Year. This goal is S.M.A.R.T because it is specific, “drink 32 ounces of water each day”; measurable, 32 ounces is the amount that will be consumed daily; attainable, although 32 ounces may be less than what is recommended, it may be a good place to start for someone with poor hydration habits, to begin with; relevant, being properly hydrated is necessary for good health; and finally, time-bound; the goal is to do this for 31 days, or the entire month of January.

Setting S.M.A.R.T goals can be key to completing any goal, whether short term, long term, or a combination of the two. Put this acronym to use when thinking of your goals for 2019!
